Itinerary
Day 1: Ulaanbaatar to Ölgii
Your adventure begins with a morning flight from Ulaanbaatar to Ölgii, the capital of Bayan-Ölgii province. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and driver. After lunch in town, visit the local museum to learn about the region's history and Kazakh culture. Overnight at a local hotel with a welcome dinner featuring traditional Kazakh cuisine.
Day 2: Ölgii to Tavan Bogd National Park
After breakfast, depart for Tavan Bogd National Park in 4WD vehicles. The scenic 5-6 hour drive takes you through spectacular mountain landscapes and past small settlements. Reach the ranger station by late afternoon and set up camp at the trailhead (2,100m). Prepare equipment for the trek and enjoy dinner while discussing the upcoming journey.
Day 3: Trek to Base Camp
Begin your trek with a challenging ascent through the beautiful Tsagaan Gol (White River) valley. Hike approximately 15km with 800m elevation gain to reach the base camp (2,900m), situated with spectacular views of the mountains and Potanin Glacier. Set up camp and acclimatize to the altitude while enjoying stunning sunset views of the surrounding peaks.
Day 4: Potanin Glacier Exploration
After breakfast, trek to the edge of the massive Potanin Glacier, Mongolia's largest. Spend the day exploring the glacier area and hike to a viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of all five peaks of Tavan Bogd, including Khuiten Peak (4,374m), Mongolia's highest. Return to base camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Optional Malchin Peak Climb or Rest Day
For experienced trekkers, attempt the non-technical climb of Malchin Peak (4,050m), offering incredible views of Russia, China, and Mongolia. Those preferring a less strenuous day can explore the surrounding valleys and lakes. Return to base camp by evening for dinner and rest.
Day 6: Base Camp to Shiveet Khairkhan
Break camp and begin trekking southeast toward the sacred mountain of Shiveet Khairkhan. Cross alpine meadows and a mountain pass offering spectacular views of the Altai range. Camp near a spring with views of Shiveet Khairkhan mountain, a site of cultural significance to local Tuvan people.
Day 7: Petroglyphs and Tuvan Families
Explore the UNESCO World Heritage site featuring ancient petroglyphs dating back thousands of years. Meet local Tuvan herder families and learn about their traditional lifestyle and customs. In the afternoon, continue trekking to our next campsite near a small river.
Day 8: Trek to Ranger Station
Complete the final leg of our trek, descending through changing landscapes back to the ranger station where our vehicles await. Enjoy a celebratory dinner and overnight camping, reflecting on the trekking achievements.
Day 9: Return to Ölgii
After breakfast, drive back to Ölgii. Along the way, stop at a Kazakh family home to experience their hospitality and perhaps see eagle hunters practicing their ancient tradition. Arrive in Ölgii by late afternoon and check into the hotel. Enjoy a farewell dinner with traditional music performance.
Day 10: Ölgii to Ulaanbaatar
Morning flight from Ölgii back to Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to your hotel or connect with your onward journey. Tour concludes upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar.
